As a published author and dedicated researcher, my dissertation, Modern Love Stories: A Narrative Inquiry of Interracial Couples, is now available through ProQuest. This study explores the complexities of interracial, intercultural, and interethnic romantic relationships, offering a deeper understanding of the intersection between cultural narratives, attachment experiences, and couple dynamics. My work contributes to the Marriage and Family Therapy field by deepening the understanding of love and partnership in diverse relationships. For those interested in exploring my research findings and methodology, the full dissertation can be accessed on ProQuest.
This study explores how early attachment relationships and cultural narratives shape interracial romantic partnerships. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach grounded in social constructivism and attachment theory, the research examines the lived experiences of two interracial couples.
Key findings reveal how childhood relationships and cultural backgrounds influence beliefs about love, marriage, and relational dynamics. Thematic analysis identified four core themes:
- Family Expectations – Navigating cultural and familial perspectives on relationships and identity.
- Power Dynamics and Gender Roles – Examining cultural norms and relational equity.
- Intercultural Couple Partnerships – Developing shared identity and negotiating cultural differences.
- Culturally Informed Couples Therapy – The importance of integrating cultural awareness in therapy to support interracial relationships.
This study emphasizes the need for culturally responsive clinical approaches in couples therapy, offering valuable insights for therapists, scholars, and practitioners in Marriage and Family Therapy.
